It’s finally been announced! For the fifth year running, Comma has published the BBC National Short Story Award anthology and on Wednesday night the 2014 shortlist was revealed on Radio 4’s Front Row.
It’s always exciting to have a box of embargoed books in the office! Now we can enjoy the build-up to the announcement of the winner on the 30th September with everyone else.
The BBC are devoting more than a week of programmes to the competition which will feature interviews with the authors, followed the next day by a reading of the story. It starts with Tessa Hadley on Front Row tonight, with Carey Mulligan (Inside Llewyn Davis, Drive, Shame) reading her story on Monday at 3.30pm. Find the full schedule here.
Remember our office refurbishment? Well, the builders found something very odd when they were working on the bottom floor.
IT WASN’T THE BOTTOM FLOOR!
Lurking underneath MadLab is a huge water-filled cellar! Not great for the building schedule but Charlie Baker, one of the building team, managed to get some great photos underneath the floorboards…
The team are working hard to make it safe and dry so we can go home as soon as possible! Huge thanks to Charlie Baker for the pictures.
As if a National Short Story Award and a secret subterranean world aren’t enough, we are also excitedly anticipating the arrival of legendary Brazilian author João Gilberto Noll next week.
He will be reading his short story from Comma’s The Book of Rio at events in London (Brazilian Embassy, Wednesday 24th Sept), Manchester (International Anthony Burgess Foundation, Thursday 25th Sept) and Charleston (Small Wonder Festival, Saturday 27th September). Please click below for full details and remember that we can not sell books on Embassy property so if you’re going to the London event and would like to buy a signed copy, please contact me first! firstname.lastname@example.org
